Even when production was down by 2%, realization prices were up by 4% at $67.4 per barrel of oil equivalent (boe). Downstream was, by far, the weakest link of all. Downstream earnings declined aggressively by 76% year over year due to lower margins and the sale of two refineries in the U.S. As a matter of fact, earnings were 74% upstream, 14% Rosneft and 12% downstream. Earnings were good but they are still a reflection of a company that is trying to reshape itself.

It took four days, but Dow 16,000 finally stuck until the close, with the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) finishing the day up 109 points. Particularly strong showings from the financial contingent of the Dow 30 pushed the average up, but their gains were small compared to the larger jumps that Sprint (NYSE: S  ) , Textura (NYSE: TXTR  ) , and Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM  ) saw. Let’s look at why these three companies did so well today, to see if we can draw hints about other potential winners down the road.

  • [By Will Ashworth]

So far, Ive given a wait-and-see rating to ZU stock and a thumbs-up to COLM stock. Another omni-channel retailer that could benefit from the brutal winter weve been having is Williams-Sonoma (WSM). WSM stock generates about half its annual revenue from online sales, and, to a much lesser extent, catalog sales.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Bed Bath & Beyond stands to benefit from the upturn in the housing market that we’ve seen recently. Already, rival Williams-Sonoma (NYSE: WSM  ) , which operates the higher-end Pottery Barn home-furnishings chain, reported extremely strong sales, with its West Elm division showing the strongest results. With Pier 1 (NYSE: PIR  ) also having shown signs of benefiting from the booming market, Bed Bath & Beyond should finally enjoy some macroeconomic tailwinds to support its results.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Paychex (PAYX) has been another top performer in 2013, buoyed by growth in jobs numbers to eke out gains of more than 46% since the first trading day of the year. Paychex is one of the biggest names in the outsourced HR services business, providing around 550,000 small and medium-sized businesses with payroll processing. By hiring Paychex, business owners can avoid dealing with the bevy of tax and compliance minutiae that come with having employees.

Because Paychex’s fortunes are tied to the health of the job market (it gets paid by having more accounts, after all), the firm faced a real problem heading into the soft economy of the Great Recession. To combat that, PAYX expanded its role, pulling out its massive customer Rolodex to offer other ancillary HR services such as 401(k) management and worker’s comp insurance. Adding new services onto its menu gives Paychex another big revenue driver from its existing client base.

Going forward, the firm has a lot to gain from upward mobility in interest rates: historically, Paychex has earned considerable profits from its float portfolio — the huge amount of cash it holds between the time employers deposit it and employees cash their paychecks. While extremely low interest rates have hurt PAYX’s float income, there’s a huge revenue stream waiting to be unlocked when rates perk back up. Paychex is another Rocket Stock name that’s heading into 2014 with strong momentum in tow.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

On Wednesday, Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX  ) will release its latest quarterly results. With the employment picture starting to perk up, the payroll and HR-services industry stands to benefit the most from an uptick in hiring, and Paychex hopes to stake its claim to get its fair share of new business.

Small cap storage stock Dot Hill Systems Corp (NASDAQ: HILL) is up 193.4% since the start of the year for a much better performance than its larger cap peers Western Digital Corp (NASDAQ: WDC) and SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), which are 55.5% and 35.3%, respectively, since the start of the year. So why has this relatively unknown small cap storage stock been a better performer than its better known storage stock peers?

  • [By Philip Mause]

I think that the current environment continues to favor companies with strong balance sheets that can take advantage of generous credit markets and, in this connection, I am still bullish on AAPL, MSFT, Cisco (CSCO), Seagate (STX), Western Digital (WDC) and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ). All things being equal, higher interest rates are bad for stocks. But the market has already priced in substantial increases in interest rates so that interest rate increases do not necessarily constitute sell signals.

The company was founded in 2003 and is based in San Francisco, California.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Leo Sun]

To make matters worse, two major competing treatments — Johnson & Johnson’s (NYSE: JNJ  ) Zytiga and Astellas/Medivation’s (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) Xtandi — were later approved in the U.S. and Europe. Both drugs quickly gained favor over Provenge, since both drugs were orally administered in contrast to Provenge’s intravenous injections, and both drugs demonstrated higher efficacy rates during clinical trials. Compared to a placebo, Zytiga and Xtandi respectively demonstrated median extensions of life of 4.6 and 4.8 months, compared to 4.1 months for Provenge.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) shares also were hit hard this week, falling 7.8% over the past five days. Shares fell 8% alone on Monday, after Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) agreed to purchase Aragon Pharmaceuticals in a $1 billion deal. It wasn’t a game-changer for J&J, considering Aragon’s developmental prostate cancer therapy ARN-509 is in phase 2 trials, although if the company can advance the drug to a regulatory victory down the road, it could one day fill in for J&J’s current blockbuster oncology drug Zytiga after its patent expires.

We’ve had two treatments recently approved by the FDA a full three months ahead of their PDUFA date: Medivation (NASDAQ: MDVN  ) and Astella Pharma’s Xtandi, and Bayer and Algeta’s Xofigo. Xtandi improved median overall survival to 18.4 months, compared with just 13.6 months for the placebo in trials while Xofigo’s median overall survival tallied 14 months, compared with 11.2 months for the control arm.

It has a license agreement with Hoffman-La Roche for the development and commercialization of compounds from CRACM. Synta Pharmaceuticals Corp. was incorporated in 2000 and is based in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By Sean Williams]

It wasn’t all rose petals and sunshine, though, as Synta Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: SNTA  ) was absolutely decimated after reporting its phase 2b/3 results on its second-line non-small cell lung cancer treatment ganetespib. The results were generally positive, with the combination of ganetespib and docetaxel improving median overall survival to 9.8 months from 7.4 months in the docetaxel-only arm. The worry among investors is that this data may not be significant enough to merit an approval by the FDA. Ganetespib’s median overall survival was more pronounced in those who were diagnosed six months or more before the study, which could lead to a selective approval there, but it would definitely limit its market potential.

The automotive industry is starting to move into aluminum. Traditionally, cars and trucks have been built mostly from steel. Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) announced this week that it will use a high-strength, military grade aluminum in the body panels of its 2015 model of its popular F-150 pickup. The move will cut 500 to 700 pounds from the vehicles weight. (Steel will still be used in the pickups frame.)

Chegg, Inc. (NYSE: CHGG) was the IPO disappointment of the week. Sure it has a lot of competition, but IPOs are supposed to be on fire now. Chegg managed to gain almost 3% on Friday to close at $9.13, but one must remember that the IPO price at $12.50 never saw the $12.50 open. The stock opened at $9.80 and closed at $8.88 on the first day, a move which will baffle IPO investors of growth companies who are buying an IPO at a time when major indexes are hitting new all-time highs. By the way, GSV Capital Corp. (NASDAQ: GSVC) was a runner-uploser along with Chegg, as this fund owned shares of Twitter and Chegg pre-IPO. The stock price was above $16 before the Twitter IPO and is now down to $12.03 after another 8.8% drop on Friday. Bye-bye.
