Hot Gas Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now

As is often the case with stocks that trade at high valuation multiples, this stock was fragile going into its earnings report, and the lower than consensus forecast has led to a significant sell-off. In my opinion, this creates a buying opportunity for long-term investors, says Paul McWilliams, editor of Next Inning.

Cree (CREE) reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $375M and non-GAAP earnings of $0.38 per fully diluted share. The consensus estimates were $378.4M and $0.38 respectively.

For fiscal Q1 (2014), the company forecasted revenue in the range of $380M to $400M and non-GAAP earnings in the range of $0.36 to $0.41. The consensus estimates ahead of the forecast were $398.4M and $0.43.

While the midpoint of its revenue guidance is somewhat below my expectation, and I was assuming the firm’s 19% corporate tax rate would hold in fiscal 2014, everything else in the story appears to be intact.

Cree’s non-GAAP operating profit margin increased to 14.0%, up from 10.2% last year, and is expected to increase to 15% in calendar Q3.

Advisors’ Opinion:

    Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK  )
I’ve mentioned Flotek Industries to Fools in the past. The relatively small ($940 million capitalization and growing) company provides a range of products and assistance for oil and gas operations, from well construction to production. It’s also the only services company — and one of but a handful of companies in any sector — that’s been accorded a perfect consensus of one (strong buy) by the analysts.

  • [By David Smith]

    Flotek Industries (NYSE: FTK  )
The smallest member of the trio, with a market cap of about $815 million, Flotek operates on the services side of the energy sector. As I’ve previously pointed out to Fools, it also constitutes a rare instance wherein the analysts who monitor the company all accord it strong buy ratings. But with Flotek’s share price having risen by more than 40% year to date, it is difficult to contest that unanimous confidence.

Advisors’ Opinion:

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Quick, what do Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE:WMT), Whole Foods Market, Inc. (NASDAQ:WFM), and Jamba, Inc. (NASDAQ:JMBA) – the purveyor of Jamba Juice smoothie shops – have in common? They’re all three offering at least one product from KonaRed Corp. (OTCBB:KRED). All told, KRED products can be found in a variety of retail outlets, ranging from mass marketers like WMT to niche players like WFM to service providers like JMBA to convenience stores like 7-Eleven to grocers like Albertson’s to…. well, the point becomes clear. KonaRed is in a lot of places. Yet, the number of spots where a KRED could multiply by eight by the middle of the year. In fact, the organization’s growth rate is the most exciting – and perhaps most understated – aspect of the KonaRed story.

  • [By Sean Williams]

    Anything but smoothie
Fruit smoothie and juice maker Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) recently completed a 1-for-5 reverse split to make its share price more attractive to more risk-averse investors and Wall Street institutions. However, no amount of cosmetic changes is enough to hide the lack of progress at Jamba over the past six years.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

If that argument isn’t enough to soothe SodaStream investors, let’s turn to Jamba Juice parent Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) .

When Starbucks began offering smoothies a few years ago — eventually followed by most of the fast-food and java-pouring doughnut chains — the bearish Jamba thesis was that broader availability of blended fruit drinks and drive-thru convenience would kill the chain.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market’s best stocks, it’s worth checking up on your companies’ free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That’s what we do with this series. Today, we’re checking in on Ashland (NYSE: ASH  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Ashland (NYSE: ASH  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That’s why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I’m looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Ashland’s competitive position could be.

  • [By Victor Selva] ow such a promising comeback, and the drop in revenue during 2012 was anticipated by investor Jean-Marie Eveillard (Trades, Portfolio), who sold out his 3.9 million share position by the third quarter of that year.

Another industry giant, Huntsman Corporation (HUN) did show more promising results, and less volatile revenues during these last years. This, of course, has led to a high price to earnings ratio discouraging investors as we see later.

    Geographically Diversified

On 2012, almost 50% of Eastman sales were generated in North America, while more than 25% were in Asia and 20% in Europe, Middle East and Africa. This diversification is to be taken into account since it guarantees long-term revenue, even if cigarette consumption decreases in some specific region (for instance, American sales declined in recent years), which would stabilize acetate tow demands worldwide.

    Industrial Background and Gurus Preference

Eastmans earnings per share growth was significantly higher than industry median (46.9% vs. 5.2%) but so was Huntsmans, at 46.5%. The critical difference between these two industry giants stands out by looking at their price to earnings: Eastmans is below median (16.4 vs. 19.1) while Huntsman rose up to 130.1, thus entailing a significant price premium relative to industry peers average.

Although Ashland does have an inferior price to earnings ratio than Eastmans (11.5), theres a significant difference in their earnings per share growth: 27%, probably caused by a decline in revenue.

This might have been one of the reasons that motivated investors David Dreman (Trades, Portfolio) and Joel Greenblatt (Trades, Portfolio) to significantly reduce their stake in Huntsman (both of them by more than 80% margin). In contrast, Leon Cooperman (Trades, Portfolio) and Scott Black (Trades, Portfolio), reinforced their positions in Eastman. Most notably, Ray Dalio (Trades, Portfolio)

OGE Energy Corp. (OGE): Another Utility with Slightly Higher Growth

Our second example, OGE Energy Corp., differs from our first only by virtue of the fact that its earnings growth rate since 1998 has averaged over 5% per annum. Nevertheless, we once again discover that the PE ratio of 15 represents a strong proxy for this companys valuation. During the short time intervals when price deviates from fair value PE of 15, it doesnt take long for price to move back into alignment with earnings.

InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion’s 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.
