Top Promising Stocks To Own Right Now

Up until now, crowdfunding has just been a way for consumers to give money to inventors concocting newfangled things ranging from Big Wheel bikes for grown-up and smartphones. But soon, it could become a way to actually invest in those companies.

The Securities and Exchange Commission voted unanimously to propose rules that, for the first time, would allow investors to buy stock in companies over the Internet using a crowdfunding exchange. These rules could reinvent the way that companies raise money by allowing them to bypass the traditional costs of going public, which usually involved hiring costly investment bankers and accountants.

The SEC’s vote on so-called equity crowdfunding is in direct response to Title III of the JOBS Act, passed last year, in which Congress is looking for a loophole to allow smaller companies to get an exemption from the strict rules controlling the sale of securities to individuals. Congress is hoping that by using Internet crowdfund ing, small and promising companies could gather capital needed to grow and expand from a wide pool of investors. These companies could, in theory, raise money they need to grow well before they could afford the relatively high costs of a traditional initial public offering.

Advisors’ Opinion:

Despite silver falling to around $23 an ounce, and gold going below $1,400, now might be the time to invest in Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX  ) , the treasure-hunting shipwreck finder whose own stock is down by a third from its 52-week high.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX  )
I love a good metals play as much as any Fool around here, but Odyssey Marine is certainly not on the buy list. Odyssey Marine is a salvage company that searches for, recovers, and monetizes metals and minerals found on the ocean floor. Make no mistake about it, the job is as cool as it sounds; unfortunately, “cool” doesn’t always translate into solid profits.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Investors around the world are becoming more aware of the potential riches to be made by companies in the sea treasure recovery industry such as J.D. Hutt (PINK JABA) and Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX) due to the media attention being paid to the raising of the Concordia. More than $60 billion rests on the ocean floor in gold (NYSE: GLD), silver (NYSE: SLV), and other valuables. As detailed in a previous article on this site, Odyssey Marine Exploration just presented at the 2013 Gateway Conference.

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

That is certainly a better way to profit from gold, SPFR Gold Shares (NYSE: GLD), and silver, iShares Silver Trust (NYSE: SLV). Both the GLD and the SLV have plunged, but sea treasure recovery is very profitable. The find today demonstrates that fact of investing! Odyssey Marine Exploration (NASDAQ: OMEX) had a huge haul off the coast of Ireland earlier this summer, which is more proof of the profit potential for this industry!!.

Consider: According to YRC, the $150.9 million it currently pays in annual interest exceeds the $92.6 million in interest obligations paid by “all [of its] competitors combined.” Con-Way (NYSE: CNW  ) , for example, sports a debt load about half of YRC’s, yet pays only about one-third as much in interest on that debt. Old Dominion Freight (NASDAQ: ODFL  ) has 12% the debt of YRC, but only 7% of the interest expense.

Nomura Securities analysts initiated coverage on Symantec Corporation (SYMC) early on Wednesday, giving the stock a “Neutral” rating because its upside is already priced into its current valuation.

The analysts see shares of SYMC reaching $29, which suggests a 14.6% upside to the stock’s Tuesday closing price of $25.30.

Nomura Securities analyst Frederick Grieb commented, “In the early innings of a classic turnaround story, but upside largely priced In. We initiate coverage of Symantec (SYMC) with a Neutral rating and a 12-month target price of $29. Symantec is a leading vender in the security and storage markets, but has struggled to grow market share post its 2005 acquisition of VERITAS. The company has faced competitive pressures in its core markets, with ‘freemium’ antivirus software pressuring the consumer business, while the storage business has been challenged by enterprise migration to Windows and Linux from Solaris and UNIX. Despite these headwinds, we are launching coverage of Symantec with a Neutral rating, as we believe management will be able to improve the business by increasing margins (perhaps to +33%) and longer-term organic growth through a combination of simplifying management structures and a better strategy to incentivize the sales force. However, gi ven the stocks 33% increase YTD, due in part to multiple expansion (P/E up 18% YTD), we believe much of the upside from this turnaround is already baked in. FY14E EPS starts at $1.2; FY15E EPS starts at $2.18.”

Symantec Corp shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Wednesday. The stock is up 34.43% year-to-date.
